The Georgia Jail System
Georgia has 154 jail facilities in 159 counties and the state jail population was 44,965 in 2005. A voluntary Georgia jails standards compliance program is managed by the GA Sheriffs’ Association.
The Georgia Prison System
In January 2011, the Georgia Dept. of Corrections held 53,09 inmates in 40 state-operated and 3 private facilities. The DOC has approximately 14.100 staff. The agency’s FY 2010 budget was $986.6 million.
The Community Corrections System
392,688 adults were on probation at the end of 2005. Most felons are supervised by the Georgia DOC’s Probation Division (a caseload of over 150,000 in 2010). Most misdemeanant probation cases are supervised by private or local agencies. Field staff of the Board of Pardons and Paroles supervised 24,029 adult parolees on December 31, 2005.
