Florida Jails and Correctional Systems
There are 113 jail facilities in Florida’s 67 counties. In 2005, the Florida jails population was 63,620 inmates. Facilities are mostly managed by sheriffs or local corrections agencies. The FL Sheriffs’ Assoc. inspects jails for standards compliance.The Florida Prison SystemAt midyear 2010, the Florida Department of Corrections managed 102,232 inmates in 144 facilities, including institutions, annexes, work camps, and work release centers. The department-wide operating budget for FY 2010 was $2.3 billion. Of the 27,736 DOC employees, over 21,000 work in facilities.The Community Corrections System There were 267,738 adult probationers in Florida at the end of 2009. The Office of Community Corrections within the DOC supervised approximately 150,000 probationers and 4,323 parolees in 2009. There are 156 field offices throughout the state with approxmately 3,800 staff. Other adult probationers were supervised by private agencies or other government agencies.
